Oliver Peck is the sort of guy who seems to be everywhere at once.  Just try keeping up with him by googling his name.  It’s not all that easy.  He always seems to be mentioned in some capacity or another, from having a mustache that is seemingly inspired by the little man on the Pringles potato chip canister, to being the ex-husband of Kat Von D, to (briefly) holding the world record for the number of tattoos done in a 24 hour period.  He has some sort of footwear deal with Vans skateboard shoe company, he’s repeatedly tattooed on the Van’s Warped Tour and his personal website hasn’t been updated since 2007.

Yet aside from all that, Peck, also lovingly known as “Ducky” and “Fuck Face” (according to the Elm Street Tattoo site) as well as my personal favourite: “Oliver Pecker”, has built a strong reputation for doing what he does best, which is of course, tattoo.  By his own estimate, Peck has been tattooing for 18 years and counting.  He’s permanently set up at Dallas Texas’ Elm Street Tattoo, where every Friday the 13th, he does nothing but 13 tattoos.

All in all, Oliver strikes people as a very relaxed, funny loving guy.  I think it’s because he’s so skilled and his tattoo work does such an excellent job of precise old school style, that he can have fun with people and with life in general.  In my opinion, the best art comes from being comfortable with yourself and your abilities.  Judging by the busy and frantic life of Oliver Peck, he has problem with any of that.

Now that I know that Oliver shares three of my own greatest passions: Slurpees, The Big Lebowski and tattooing, I’ll be sure to bring him a cola Slurpee and chat about the adventures of The Dude, should I ever be lucky enough to get some tattoo time with him.

Looking for that perfect work of art for your home or maybe your studio?  Love tattoos?  How about a Kim Saigh portrait?  No?  How about one of Jeff Raissier?  A naked Jo Harrison?  Or how about Tim Kern’s hands?

Well, if you are interested in oil paintings done of tattoo masters and the tattoo world itself, then look no further than the art of Shawn Barber.  Barber is responsible for an extensive array of tattoo inspired art – correction, an extensive array of very good tattoo inspired art.

Most likely, if you’ve ever watched Kat Von D’s LA Ink program (and I know you have, so don’t try to pretend like you haven’t…we’re all guilty), then most likely you’ve noticed a large portrait of Kat hanging in the High Voltage studio.  That’s a Shawn Barber.

Barber’s work seems to also be showing at various galleries on quite a regular basis.  The tattoo portraits have been something of a passion of Shawn’s since 2005, with his most recent exhibitions being in Montreal, Canada this past September at the Yves Laroche Gallery, and a solo show at San Francisco’s Shooting Gallery this past August.  In April of 2010, Barber will have another solo exhibit of his tattoo portraits at New York City’s Joshua Liner Gallery.

Take a look at Shawn’s very cool work here and there’s also his book of portraits from 2006, called Tattooed Portraits: New Paintings by Shawn Barber, though it is hard to find. If you feel like paying $240 for what is a $30 book, you can always go over to Amazon and pick it up. Otherwise, you might have to search a little.

If we paraphrase the famous verses from Shakespeare, then to ink or not to ink – that is the question. Religious Christian people are divided into two groups. One group says that tattoos have never had a religious attitude and were worn by pagans only, while the other group claims that tattoos in the name of God are a pious action that carries His message to other people. Barbarity and insubordination to the Christian laws stands against the facts about tattooed Christians and Crusader’s inked crosses. This argument will probably never end. But today the so called Christian tattoos exist and a bible tattoo design is one of the most desirable by the people who want to get a tattoo.

A cross is a ubiquitous tattoo design all over the world. It is simple yet it bears a lot of meanings.

Such birds as peacock and phoenix are also considered to have a Christian meaning: they symbolize resurrection. A pelican symbolizes atonement and a dove is the famous sign of the Holy Spirit.

A fish, a sheep or a butterfly also bear a religious meaning, even when you see deer tattoo pictures you should know that many of them symbolize piety and devotion to Christianity.

Praying hands, Virgin Mary, crucified Jesus, a heart, a burning torch – just name it. There are also a lot of unusual and original designs. For example, I know a young man who has a tattoo of the crown of thorns – which is nothing special – except for it is placed right where his heart is. There are also a lot of scenes in the Bible that give us many perfect ideas for a tattooed sleeve of full back tattoo, that (when made by a truly professional artist) will be a real masterpiece.

Many people believe that if they show their faith to the others, then it will be spread even wider in the world. Maybe there is nothing bad about having such a tattoo. What do you think?

Frogs are wonderful creatures. On one hand they are weird animals with wet and cold skin, pop-eyed faces and webbings, but in the other hand, they have beautifully colored jackets and they move gracefully. When we look at deer tattoo pictures, we admire them vey much, but some species of frogs also have plausible chances to become the world’s most beautiful animals. People couldn’t but notice this beauty and enjoy it by various means, and one of them is tattooing these creatures.

But there are other reasons for tattooing frogs besides aesthetic. Frogs also have various meanings to the mankind. In the ancient times a frog was depicted as the Mother of our Universe that held our world, many Egyptian gods were depicted having a human body and the head of a frog. One Egyptian goddess, who had a head of a frog, was Heketh – the goddess of birth, fertility, immortality and resurrection. Such associations came from the frog’s life circle – from spawn to tad poles, and to a mature frog later. Frogs also tend to appear at a certain time of the year, and in Egypt in happened right before the flood of the Nile which meant the beginning of a new planting and harvesting season and the end of the draught.

Another fact about frogs that amused people was their ambiguous nature: these creatures can live in the water as well as on the ground. They are intermediaries between these two elements.

Early Christians had special lamps in their churches that were made in the shape of a lotus flower with a frog in it. Sometimes there were a sign on such lamps that said “I am the Resurrection”. Unfortunately their attitude to frogs changed in the Middle Ages, when frogs were associated with witchcraft and blasphemy. Nevertheless, today there are no such superstitions.

If we search for frog tattoos we will find a lot of beautiful masterpieces. These creatures look so cute and eccentric on human’s skin that it is sometimes very hard to fight a desire to get a frog tattoo straight away, too.
